So, it’s another new month and I really can’t catch my breath…. Where did the month of June go?

Hello July, it looks like another busy month! So much has happened, but there is still so much to do. The increase in support that we have received these past few weeks has been overwhelming. After two years of banging on doors to get our voices heard, things are finally starting build momentum. It has been emotionally draining and at times seemed unachievable, until now.

Knowing that our vision to improve representation in dance education has now been recognised by some of the leading vocational colleges in this country, fills my heart. To partner with ten colleges last month that will help the development of our research and framework project, really is so exciting and means so much to so many

As a mixed-race woman that loves her industry, knowing that people are finally listening and are prepared to share this journey with TIRED, makes me realise that we can make real changes for the future generation

On a personal level, last month was one of the proudest times of my life. My first born, Louis Gaunt made his West End debut playing the role of Bert in Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins and to sit there in the audience watching him fly, was one of the best days of my life. To top it all off, a member of the cast approached me to say how monumental Louis’ debut was. Louis is the first performer of colour to play that role, which just proves that that landscape is slowly but surely changing

Pride and passion are two things that are prominent in my life and something I have passed onto my three children. Being proud of who you are, what you stand for and where you come from is so important and no one should ever forget that. Being passionate about your beliefs and your truth will carry you a long way. I really do hope that my children remain grounded and assured of their abilities, their individuality and identity.

With these progressive times there is also an underlying feeling of objection and fear. Fear that the landscape is changing so much that it becomes a token gesture. Fear that this is all time sensitive and that if we don’t continue to drive the change, then all this work will have been for nothing

In those moments of darkness, I really do try to remember how this all started and how much has been achieved already. Doubting your abilities and the intention of others is self-destructive, so for the month of July

I am going to stop……….

Justifying myself when trying to convince others that more representation is needed

I am going to try to…….

Understand why some people are still afraid to work as a collective to become more inclusive

I am going to continue……

Learning to look back on what we have achieved

I am going to remember, Stacey….

You’ve got this!!
